Swordfishtrombones in 1983 marked a major change for Tom Waits. Gone were the Bukowski characters and heavy drama instead Waits followed an artistic Captain Beefheart vision of images that drove songs down carnival paths. Gone too were the jazz groves of previous work instead the idea took shape for a snap shot of images of a whole new world of eclectic voices, soaked in pulp fiction/crime noir and the over top unique imagination of Tom Waits.
