Rain Dogs in 1985 illustrated a mature Tom Waits. Again changes contributed (beginning in 1980) to his overall shedding skin; he left his manager, Elektra-Asylum for Island Records, but the biggest change was marrying Kathleen Brennan, an Irish-American story editor. Later Waits would say, I didn't just marry a beautiful woman, I married a record collection.
Tom Waits’ music aided by Brennan’s influences had depth with scores of influences. Broad musical styles flow in a free form of dirt and various American styles of by-gone eras that fit Waits’ new vision.
Rain Dogs is a loose theme album about New York City’s urban dispossessed. Eighteen songs co-written by Brennan have an organic vibe of poetic beauty and charm. Downtown Train later became a hit for Rod Steward and others.
Guitar has a greater role and allows the beauty of each song to stand on its own almost like a scene in a film. Marc Ribot and Keith Richards add the grit to the soul of Rain Dogs.
