Born in Rhode Island and moved to Nashville in 1973, he became acquainted with songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, and Rodney Crowell, and in the early '80s he formed his own rock band, In the early 80's, he was active in his own rock band, David Olney and the X-Rays, and after the band disbanded, he continued to play solo on a string of excellent albums. After the band disbanded, he went on to release a series of excellent solo albums, and his songs were recorded by Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Del McCauley, Linda Ronstadt, and many others. This is a tribute album to the legendary musician and musician's musician, featuring covers of his songs by a wide range of artists who revere his work. In addition to new interpretations by Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Willis Alan Ramsey, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Mary Gauthier, Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller, and others, the album includes previously unreleased live recordings by Townes Van Zandt.
